Start by watching the 30 minute video which outlines the money programme. It will help you to know where to start, how to teach and show you some of the activities and resources.

We then discuss how to introduce money to a young child, teaching them about exchanging a coin for an item. This includes consideration of the challenges of handling small coins.

Section 3 covers learning the value of the coins by including Numicon. there are lots of activities and resources, including coin lotto to link numerals to coins to Numicon and thus begin to understand value.

In section 4 the £1 coin is introduced. We introduce this earlier in the programme and explain how it can be used with a person who can count in ones up to 5.

In section 5 the £2 coin is also introduced.

4. Making amounts with two coins. Using 10ps up to £1

In section 6 we teach how to make amounts when the exact coin does not exist, for example, amounts such as 4p, 15p, 21p, so the child has to use two coins. This leans on addition and so the use of Numicon is useful.

In section 7 we link the tens time table to counting in 10ps and use it to count out amounts up to £i, shopping for items for 70p, etc.

Again there are lots of activities and resources.

In section 8 we we focus on 5p+5p=10p, 10p+10p=20p and five 10p coins =50p. This section could be omitted.

In section 9 we have fun learning that two 50p coins are equivalent to £1 coin.

5. The decimal point, pounds and pence

In section 10 we introduce the decimal point and work on making amounts such as £1.20, then £1.25, so using 2 coins and then 3 coins and tricky amounts such as £1.05.

In section 11 we focus on making amounts such as £1.21, so three coins are needed; a £1 coin and two others.

In section 12 we play around with how you can make any amount below £1 by using 1p, 2p and 10p - so only needing to count in ones, twos and tens. This section can be omitted.

6. Using the calculator, paper money, the value of money

In section 13 look at entering amounts on a calculator to add up to a total that can be counted. Amounts such as 51p need to be entered as 0.51, amounts such as £1 and 5p to be entered as 1.05.

In section 14 introduce £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes, counting out £1 coins to make £5, £10, exchanging two £5 notes for a £10 note.

In section 15 we tackle understanding the difference between £5 and 5p and the value of items. Again, lots of activities and resources.

Section 16 is a very brief section considering how we must pay enough money, for example, if an item costs £4.80 we need to give £5 and wait for change.
